OCR: To learn why the force of breaking waves causes matter to move significantly, Leonardo studied waves breaking on a beach. "As the wave after striking the seashore turns back along the bed of the sea as [if] the result of a somersault, it encounters the succeeding wave ... and breaks itself upon it ... and . .. continues toward the sea, carrying with it the lower part of the water that struck it" (26v) Demonstrate In this laboratory experiment, which identifies various stages of a wave as it breaks, a laser and fluorescent water are used to demonstrate Leonardo's observation. When the laser strikes a vertical plane of water, the plane appears as bright yellow. The somewhat faded images in front of the illuminated vertical plane are variations in waves that are moving in a cross-tank direction.
